Northern Cruise

By Jeremiah K Durick

PROMPT — If only ...

There must be something here

Worth the effort

The time spent.

The foghorn goes off

Every two minutes

Reminding us

Where we are and

What it means.

This is a coastline

Far enough north that

It’s finally cool

Perhaps cold enough

To comment on.

They even warned

About icebergs.

There’s a whole Titanic thing

Hanging around in all this

Historic — women and children

First

While the band plays something

To fit the moment

“Nearer My God to Thee”

And we go down or

Just imagine that it might happen.

Perhaps that’s the something here

Waiting for us to discover

And spend the effort and time.
