Her Dreams Become Her Truth

By Carissa Kobel

PROMPT — If only ...

In her dreams, a cradle rocks

Lullabies constantly in her head

She chose to chase a clock

It wasn’t important to go to bed

Longing for love, but on the wrong block

It will happen later she said

She walks through shadows of choices made

The weight of her steps, no one can repair

It’s all her fault, for this is what she paid

She cries out, but only in despair

The dream is beginning to fade

Why me, she asks in prayer

She’s happy for everyone else by default

The scars are constant reminders on her skin

More news causes her to halt

It’s so easy for her kin

When will she realize this isn’t her fault?

Thankful for her eight paws

She is now thawed

Grateful for her rock

Like a knight he unlocked

Blessed unconditionally by her flock

Carissa Kobel is 42 years young and this is the first poem she has ever written. It's very personal to her, as it is her story. Carissa wants other women to know they are not alone. Carissa writes from Dwight, IL.
